Why Is My Internet So Slow?

Compare devices, Wi-Fi and Ethernet to locate the slow part of the connection before buying new equipment.

Start With Three Comparisons

  1. Test the same device near the router and in the usual room.
  2. Test another device in the same location.
  3. Test with Ethernet when available.

These comparisons separate a location issue, device issue and broadband issue.

Common Causes

  • Distance, thick walls and interference weaken Wi-Fi.
  • Background updates, cloud backup and streaming consume capacity.
  • An old router, 100 Mbps port or damaged cable can cap speed.
  • A crowded 2.4 GHz band can be slower than 5 GHz near the router.
  • Peak-hour congestion or an ISP line problem can affect every device.
  • A VPN can add distance and encryption overhead.

Improve the Connection

Move the router into an open central position, connect fixed devices by Ethernet, update router firmware using the manufacturer’s instructions and pause unnecessary background traffic. Restart equipment before replacing it. If wired tests remain consistently below the plan, collect several results and contact the ISP.

Check Equipment Limits

The slowest supported component sets the link rate. A fast cable cannot overcome a 100 Mbps router port, and a new router cannot increase the speed purchased from the ISP. Use the Ethernet cable and port guide before upgrading.
