How to Restart a Modem and Router Correctly
A normal restart can clear temporary connection problems. It is different from pressing the factory-reset button.
Correct Restart Sequence
- Save work and note which devices are affected.
- Unplug power from the router.
- Unplug power from the modem or ONT only if the provider allows it.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem or ONT first.
- Wait for its online, PON or connection indicator to stabilize; this can take several minutes.
- Reconnect the router.
- Wait two or three minutes, reconnect one device and test.
Restart Is Not Factory Reset
Do not press a recessed Reset button for a normal restart. A factory reset can erase the Wi-Fi name, password, ISP login, parental controls and port settings. Use it only with configuration information and a clear reason.
When Restarting Does Not Help
Check warning lights, cables and an ISP outage. If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi fails, focus on router wireless settings. If every device remains offline and the modem or ONT cannot establish service, contact the ISP.
Test After Restarting
Run a test on one device before reconnecting heavy-use devices. Compare Wi-Fi near the router with an Ethernet test. A restart may restore service but will not solve poor router placement, a damaged cable or an undersized internet plan.
