Modem vs Router: What Is the Difference?
A modem or ONT connects the home to the provider. A router shares that connection among local wired and wireless devices.

How Data Travels
A typical path is provider network → modem or ONT → router WAN port → router LAN or Wi-Fi → device. When diagnosing a problem, check each boundary in that order.
Which Device Should Be Restarted?
If every device loses internet, restart the modem or ONT and router using the correct power sequence. If only Wi-Fi devices fail while Ethernet works, focus on the router’s wireless function. If only one device fails, start with that device.
Do You Need Both?
Many homes need provider-termination equipment and a router, but a single gateway may combine them. Do not buy a separate modem for fiber unless the provider explicitly supports it. Confirm compatibility before replacing provider equipment.
