Internet Cable Types Explained

Identify the cable by its connector and purpose before unplugging or replacing home internet equipment.

Four Common Cable Families

Ethernet Categories

Cat 5e and Cat 6 are common in homes. Cat 6 is a practical choice for many gigabit connections. Cat 6a is useful for longer higher-speed runs. Read the complete Ethernet category guide before paying extra for Cat 7 or Cat 8.

Safe Handling

  • Hold a connector rather than pulling the cable.
  • Release the Ethernet locking tab before removal.
  • Avoid sharp bends, crushed cable and running data cable tightly beside power wiring.
  • Do not disconnect or clean provider fiber unless trained to do so.
  • Label both ends before changing several cables.

Troubleshooting With Cables

Reseat both ends, inspect the connector, try a known-good cable and test another port. A link light confirms a physical connection but does not guarantee internet access. Compare the link speed with the expected router and adapter capability.

Is an Ethernet cable the same as an internet cable?

Ethernet is one type used inside a home network. The provider may deliver service over coaxial, fiber or telephone wiring.

Can I connect fiber directly to a normal router Ethernet port?

Usually the provider fiber terminates at an ONT, which then supplies Ethernet to the router. Some provider equipment combines these functions.

Can a cable lower internet speed?

Yes. Damage, poor termination or a lower negotiated link rate can limit speed or cause drops.
