Wi-Fi Printer Won’t Connect: Check the Network Before Reinstalling
When a printer disappears from your computer or phone, start with how the devices connect. A printer can be powered on without being reachable from the device sending the document.
Confirm the intended connection
Check that the printer and your phone or computer use the same intended home network. Look at the printer’s wireless indicator or network screen rather than assuming it retained the previous setup.
If you recently changed routers, renamed Wi-Fi or changed the password, that change is a useful starting point. Use the setup instructions for your exact printer model to reconnect it.
Restart and test one small document
Restart the printer, sending device and router to clear temporary connection errors. Wait for them to finish starting before submitting a short test document. Avoid repeatedly submitting the same job while the printer remains unavailable.
Use the printer’s network report
Where supported, print a Wireless Network Test Report or Network Configuration page. HP recommends these reports for identifying wireless connection problems. The menu and report names depend on the model.
Compare the reported network with the one your computer uses. Record any reported failure so you can give support something more specific than “it won’t print.”
Distinguish local printing from cloud features
Do not assume every printing failure is an internet outage. Local printing and internet-dependent printer services use different connection paths. For an HP printer using Web Services, cloud features require internet access; troubleshoot those separately from device discovery.
If reconnection fails, contact the printer manufacturer with the model, report result and recent router changes. Once it is reachable, print the same small document to confirm recovery.
